For example, say there is a rich and arrogant dictator. He directly or indirectly causes the agonizing deaths of thousands of innocent people. He has a huge estate, fancy cars, and naturally has lots of women.
But imagine the spiritual state of a soul that has everything it wants, no cares except its own desires, and has caused so much hurt.
After we die, we tend to go to where our souls fit in best - especially the souls who do not dare come to God's Light ("For everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed."). In the case of those who found their joy in greed and lording it over others, they go to their paradise - except filled with all manner of souls just like themselves.
There, they feed on each other. Living torment.
(I believe they can still grow out of those situations, but that growth may be very, very slow in coming.)
"Give, and it shall be given to you." "The measure you give shall be measured back to you."
One of the interesting points is to note that the SPIRIT of this man is ALREADY in a dark and painful state. There is a deep emptiness that impels him to consume more and more, exert power more and more, and try to hide and fill that hidden unspoken pain. Upon death the real difference is that the outer world is taken away, and only the inner remains - along with spirits of similar outlook.
